How to store 18k gold plated jewellery

To extend the life of your gold-plated jewellery, follow the below care advice:

  • Keep it dry: Store your jewellery in a dry, cool place away from humidity, as moisture can cause tarnishing of the sterling silver beneath the plating.
  • Use a soft pouch or lined jewellery box: Prevent scratches and friction by keeping each piece separate. Soft cloth pouches or anti-tarnish jewellery boxes work best.
  • Avoid exposure to chemicals: Perfumes, lotions, hairsprays, and household cleaning agents can accelerate the wear of gold plating. Always put jewellery on last when getting ready.
  • Remove before water exposure: Since sterling silver is prone to tarnishing and gold plating can fade with moisture, take off your jewellery before showering, swimming, or exercising.

How to clean 18k gold plated jewellery

  • Gently wipe with a soft, dry cloth – After each wear, use a microfiber or jewellery polishing cloth to remove oils and residue. Avoid abrasive materials, as they can wear down the gold layer.
  • Limit water exposure – Unlike solid gold or gold vermeil, gold-plated jewellery should not be soaked. If needed, lightly dampen a cloth with lukewarm water and carefully wipe the jewellery, ensuring it's fully dry afterward.
  • Avoid silver polish and harsh cleaners which may strip away the gold plating. Instead, stick to dry polishing or mild cleaning when necessary.
  • If your jewellery starts to lose its shine, gently buff it with a clean cloth to restore its lustre without damaging the plating.
  • Rotate your pieces – Gold plating naturally wears over time, so consider alternating your jewellery to minimise excessive wear on any single piece.
